Reign: The Conqueror Movie

Reign: The Conqueror, released in 2000, was a collaborative effort between the renowned animation studio Madhouse and the visionary director Peter Chung, best known for creating Aeon Flux. Produced as a feature-length adaptation of the television series Alexander Senki, the project sought to reimagine the life of Alexander the Great through a high-concept, science-fiction lens. The film was commissioned during a period of experimentation at Madhouse, where the studio was eager to push the boundaries of traditional anime aesthetics by blending historical epic themes with avant-garde narrative structures.

The film is defined by its distinctive visual identity, which draws heavily from early 20th-century modernist art, specifically Cubism and Expressionism. Peter Chung’s character designs prioritize elongated, angular forms and unconventional perspectives, intended to move away from the standardized character archetypes prevalent in late-90s Japanese animation. While the film’s bold stylistic departure drew criticism from some audiences expecting a more traditional historical drama, it was widely praised by critics and animation enthusiasts for its uncompromising artistic vision and its willingness to treat the medium as a canvas for complex, abstract storytelling.
