The narrator, an unnamed adolescent boy living in the present time in an unspecified part of Japan, begins to notice that he can see strange creatures that no one else seems to be able to see. As time passes, he ruminates over his relationship with these creatures, why he is able to see them, and what it says about the person he is. One day, however, he notices that one of these creatures seems to be behaving differently than before...

Where it came from
Right Places: Where I Was Meant to Be at That Time is an autobiographical work by the British-American artist and author Quentin Crisp. Published in 1990, the volume serves as a sequel to his celebrated 1968 memoir, The Naked Civil Servant, focusing on his later life, his move to New York City in his seventies, and his adjustment to fame following the success of his earlier work and the subsequent film adaptation.
The book is characterized by Crisp’s signature blend of wit, flamboyant introspection, and detached observational style. Written when he was already an icon of the gay rights movement and a fixture of the New York arts scene, the narrative examines the challenges of aging, the nature of public performance, and his distinct philosophy of radical self-acceptance. It remains a key text for understanding his influence on late 20th-century queer identity and his unique approach to public life.
