Rilakkuma and Kaoru

Rilakkuma and Kaoru was released in 2019 as a stop-motion animated series produced by the Japanese studio dwarf, known for its meticulous craftsmanship in character-based animation. The project was commissioned to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Rilakkuma character, a global franchise created by Aki Kondo for San-X. By transitioning the static, beloved bear into a stop-motion format, the series aimed to ground the whimsical characters in a tactile, relatable reality, exploring themes of urban loneliness and the comfort found in simple companionship.

The series was directed by Masahito Kobayashi and written by Naoko Ogigami, whose narrative focus shifted the perspective to Kaoru, a hardworking office employee navigating the stresses of adulthood. The design approach utilized physical puppets and hand-built miniature sets, creating a warm, artisanal aesthetic that contrasted with traditional digital animation. Upon its release on Netflix, the series received critical praise for its gentle storytelling and high technical production value, successfully bridging the gap between children’s branding and a sophisticated, adult-oriented audience.
