Iwaki Tomonori is an average 15-year-old boy who likes older women. He happens to have a crush on his teacher, but soon thereafter, learns she has become engaged. He heads home brokenhearted, only to find a 12-year-old girl named Rizel at his home, who he learns the Japanese government has married him to against his will. Furthermore, he learns Rizel is no ordinary girl; she is a biochemically engineered human, and her creators (her "papa"s, as they are often referred to) promise to waive multiple bills of Iwaki's parents in exchange to be allowed to stay at their house, and thus Iwaki's life with Rizel begins.

Where it came from
Rizelmine was produced by the renowned studio Madhouse and first broadcast in 2002. It originated from the creative mind of manga artist Akihiro Yoshino, who sought to blend elements of romantic comedy with a subtle, surreal science fiction premise. The series follows the life of a government-created girl named Rizel who is assigned to live with a high school student, navigating a narrative structure that leans into whimsical and lighthearted episodic storytelling typical of the period.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to emphasize a charming, understated aesthetic that complemented the show's domestic focus. While the series emerged during a competitive era for experimental anime, it is remembered for its distinct visual identity and the signature production quality associated with Madhouse. Upon its release, it received a modest reception, appealing primarily to viewers who appreciated niche, character-driven narratives over the more common action-heavy tropes of the early 2000s.
