Rockman.EXE Stream

Rockman.EXE Stream, released in 2004, represents the third iteration of the Mega Man Battle Network anime series produced by Xebec. It was developed to capitalize on the immense popularity of the Game Boy Advance game series, aiming to expand the narrative stakes by introducing the concept of Cross Fusion—a direct physical connection between the protagonist, Lan Hikari, and his NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE, within the real world.

The series was directed by Masamitsu Hidaka, who sought to blend the established high-energy, digital-battle aesthetic of its predecessors with a more mature, interconnected plot involving the dark organization Nebula. While it faced the challenges of a long-running franchise seeking to maintain audience interest, the series is noted for its ambitious shift toward merging virtual and physical realities, reflecting the broader pop-culture fascination with augmented reality at the time.
