Romeo's Blue Skies

Romeo's Blue Skies was produced by Nippon Animation in 1995 as the twenty-first entry in the studio's long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. Based on the novel Die schwarzen Brüder by Lisa Tetzner and Kurt Held, the series follows a young boy named Romeo who is sold into indentured servitude as a chimney sweep in Milan. The adaptation was directed by Kōzō Kusuba and aimed to balance the harsh realities of nineteenth-century child labor with the emotional resilience and bonds of friendship developed among the young sweeps, known as the Black Brothers.

The series is noted for its character designs by Toshiyuki Nishimura, which maintained the classic, evocative aesthetic associated with the World Masterpiece Theater brand. It resonated with audiences for its sensitive handling of themes regarding systemic poverty and human dignity. Despite the somber premise, the animation was praised for its expressive storytelling and atmospheric depiction of urban life, cementing its status as a poignant contribution to the canon of mid-nineties anime.
