Rose O'Neill Kewpie

The 2009 Kewpie television series was produced by TMS Entertainment to revive the legacy of Rose O'Neill's iconic illustrations, which first debuted in the early 20th century. By modernizing the aesthetic for a contemporary audience, the studio aimed to retain the whimsical, cherubic charm of the original comic strip characters while adapting them into a narrative-driven animated format. This series served as a celebration of the enduring cultural footprint of the Kewpie, which had already transitioned from printed illustrations to highly collectible bisque dolls over the preceding decades.

The character design process sought to balance O'Neill’s classic 1912 visual language with the polished, fluid animation standards of 2009. TMS Entertainment utilized a bright, clean palette that emphasized the expressive, playful nature of the Kewpies, moving away from the static, emotive sketches of the source material toward a more kinetic, character-based storytelling style. While the reception was niche, the series is recognized by animation historians as a faithful, if stylistically updated, tribute to one of the most recognizable icons in early American popular culture.
