Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro

Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro, also known as Abarenbo Rikishi!! Matsutaro, was produced by Toei Animation and premiered in 2014. The series is based on a long-running manga by Tetsuya Chiba, the legendary artist best known for Ashita no Joe. While Chiba is celebrated for his emotive, dramatic storytelling, this specific adaptation focuses on the titular Matsutaro, a physically imposing and unruly man who reluctantly enters the world of professional sumo, clashing with the traditions and discipline of the sport.

The 2014 anime adaptation was notable for its distinct departure from the polished, high-definition aesthetic common in modern animation, opting for a style that paid homage to the grit and rugged character designs of the original 1970s manga. Directed by Yukio Kaizawa, the series aimed to capture the rough-edged character study of its protagonist. Though it received a mixed reception due to its unconventional visual approach and the polarizing nature of the main character, it stands as a unique entry in the sports anime genre for its refusal to romanticize the protagonist's development.
