RUMBLE GARANNDOLL

Rumble Garanndoll was produced in 2021 by the animation studio Lerche, emerging as an original mecha anime series. The project was created to explore a satirical and nostalgic vision of Japan's subculture, set in an alternate 2019 where the country has been annexed and purged of its otaku culture. The narrative focuses on the resistance movement using robotic suits known as Garanndolls to fight against a regime intent on 'standardizing' society.

The series was directed by Masaomi Andō, who worked with a team at Lerche to blend fast-paced mecha action with commentary on the preservation of pop-culture hobbies. The visual design centers on the contrast between the drab, oppressive atmosphere of the occupied Japan and the vibrant, exaggerated aesthetics of the mecha battles. Upon its release, it was noted for its eccentric premise and its willingness to lean into the absurdity of its genre-bending narrative, though it remains a niche entry in the studio's broader catalog.
