Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc

Released in 2011, Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc serves as a two-part reimagining of the iconic Kyoto arc from Nobuhiro Watsuki’s original manga. Produced by Studio DEEN, this project was conceived to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Rurouni Kenshin anime franchise. Unlike the original 1990s television adaptation, which followed the narrative beats of the source material closely, this OVA was designed to provide a condensed, modernized perspective on the protagonist Kenshin Himura’s conflict with Makoto Shishio.

The production was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who also helmed the original anime series, though the artistic direction here leans toward a darker, more stylistic approach to character design and movement. While intended to celebrate a beloved story, the project received a mixed reception from the fan community. Many viewers noted that the heavy compression of the narrative led to significant plot omissions, resulting in a departure from the pacing that originally defined the Kyoto arc’s reputation.
