Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan (ONA)

The 2013 ONA adaptation of Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan emerged as a web-based promotional effort to generate interest in Shūichi Asō’s popular manga series, which had been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since 2012. Produced by J.C.Staff and supervised by Sakurai Hiroaki, this short-form release served as an experimental precursor to the longer-running television anime series that would follow in 2016. Its production was driven by the need to translate the gag manga's frantic, dialogue-heavy pacing into a visual medium, focusing on the comedic trials of a psychic protagonist attempting to lead an ordinary life.

The design of the ONA prioritized a minimalist aesthetic that stayed faithful to Asō’s original character illustrations, utilizing a high-contrast style that mirrored the source material's manga panels. By stripping away complex animation to emphasize the sharp timing of the jokes, the production team aimed to capture the essence of the series' slapstick wit.
