Sanctuary

Sanctuary, the 1931 novel by William Faulkner, emerged during a period of intense creative output for the author. Written in a deliberate attempt to achieve commercial success following the modest reception of his earlier works, Faulkner drew upon the darker elements of the American South. The narrative centers on the abduction of Temple Drake and explores themes of corruption and moral decay, reflecting the grim sensibilities of the Southern Gothic literary tradition.

The novel's publication history is marked by its notorious reputation, as it was famously written in three weeks and later revised extensively by Faulkner to address the shock it caused his publisher. Despite the initial controversy surrounding its graphic content, the book became a critical touchstone for its experimental structure and stark prose. It remains a definitive example of Faulkner’s ability to weave complex psychological trauma into the fabric of the twentieth-century American landscape.
