Satsujin Kippu wa Heart-iro

Satsujin Kippu wa Heart-iro, released in 1990 by Studio Nihon Eizou, is an original video animation that reflects the distinctive aesthetic and thematic sensibilities of the late eighties and early nineties Japanese animation industry. During this era, the OVA format allowed independent studios to experiment with niche genres and mature storytelling that often diverged from the broader appeal required for television broadcasts. The work serves as a capsule of the period’s character design trends and the industry’s push toward high-concept, stylized thrillers aimed at the home video market.

The production is typical of the era's collaborative efforts, where the visual direction aimed to balance stylistic flair with the budgetary constraints of the direct-to-video medium. While the title remains a relatively obscure entry in the broader landscape of 1990s anime, it represents the studio's attempt to capture a specific audience interested in suspense and genre-blending narratives. Its reception was largely localized to dedicated enthusiasts of the OVA boom, contributing to the historical record of a studio that operated during a highly prolific and transformative time for animation production in Japan.
