Where it came from
See ya Mr. Banno! was produced in 2005 as a graduation project by students at the Tokyo University of the Arts, known as Geidai Animation. The film serves as a poignant, short-form animated reflection on the complexities of human relationships and the difficulty of saying goodbye, emerging from a period when the university was increasingly recognized for fostering experimental and highly personal storytelling techniques in animation.
The film is celebrated for its distinctive visual aesthetic, which favors hand-drawn textures and a minimalist approach to character movement. By stripping back complex visual effects, the creators focused on the emotional weight of their narrative, achieving critical appreciation within the Japanese independent animation circuit for its maturity and the evocative simplicity of its direction.
