Where it came from
Sensuikan ni Koi wo Shita Kujira no Hanashi, released in 1989, emerged during a transitional period for Nikkatsu as the studio navigated the changing landscape of the Japanese film industry. Produced as an animated feature, the project sought to tap into the era's growing interest in environmentally themed narratives and whimsical storytelling, distancing itself from the studio's historical focus on action and exploitation genres.
The film's visual identity reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1980s Japanese animation, characterized by a soft, illustrative approach intended to evoke emotional resonance rather than technical spectacle. While the production serves as a notable entry in Nikkatsu's later animation portfolio, it received a relatively modest critical reception, often cited today as a niche curiosity within the studio's extensive and varied cinematic history.
