Where it came from
Sentimental Journey was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Sunrise and aired in 1998 as part of an effort to adapt the popular Tokimeki Memorial dating simulation franchise. The series was designed to translate the game's core premise of high school romance into a episodic narrative format, aiming to capture the gentle, nostalgic atmosphere of adolescent life that made the source material a cultural touchstone in Japan.
The production sought to offer a sincere look at youth and longing, moving away from the more kinetic action titles Sunrise was traditionally known for at the time. While the show was met with a divided critical reception due to the difficulty of adapting a choice-based game into a linear television format, it remains a notable entry in the studio's late-nineties experimental portfolio and a point of interest for collectors focusing on the history of the dating sim genre.
