Where it came from
Seoul Station is a 2016 South Korean animated horror film directed by Yeon Sang-ho, serving as a prequel to his live-action blockbuster Train to Busan. Developed to explore the systemic societal neglect that precedes a catastrophic outbreak, the film centers on the struggles of the marginalized populations living near the titular Seoul Station. Yeon utilized his background in gritty, socially conscious animation to create a narrative that is intentionally more bleak and cynical than its cinematic sequel.
The film's visual design emphasizes the stark contrast between the city's infrastructure and the desperation of its inhabitants, aiming to ground the supernatural threat in a tangible, decaying urban environment. While it received attention for its atmospheric tension and its thematic bridge to Train to Busan, the film faced a divided critical reception, with some praising its uncompromising social commentary while others found the animation style and grim tone challenging compared to mainstream studio releases.
