It is the peaceful Edo period in Japan, and ninjas are hardly needed anymore. Karyu, a particularly skilled ninja, is forced to do work as a hired killer. She is asked to kill a merchant, but when she gets there, she finds that his servant is actually a ninja, who is just as skilled as Karyu. Her name is Uzume. Karyu and Uzume then compete against eachother in a bloody battle for superiority.

Where it came from
Shadow, released in 2004, is a standalone original video animation produced by the Japanese studio Animate Film Planning & Production (APPP). It emerged during a period when the studio was heavily involved in both high-profile adaptations and experimental darker works, positioning this title within a niche of atmospheric psychological storytelling that favored stylistic visual choices over mainstream appeal.
The animation reflects the distinct house style of APPP during the early 2000s, characterized by a somber color palette and deliberate pacing. While the project was intended to showcase the studio's capacity for evocative, moody sequences, it arrived at a time of significant market saturation for short-form animation, leading to a quiet reception that relegated it to a cult status among collectors interested in the studio's broader, varied portfolio.
