Where it came from
Shamanic Princess was released in 1996 as a six-episode original video animation (OVA) series produced by Bandai Visual and Animation International. Emerging during the height of the mid-90s boom in high-concept dark fantasy anime, the project was created and directed by Mutsumi Inomata and Kia Asamiya. The series sought to blend atmospheric, occult-themed storytelling with the intricate, detailed character designs that were hallmarks of its directors' distinct visual styles.
The narrative follows Tiara, a magical practitioner tasked with recovering a stolen relic, navigating a story that balances traditional shojo aesthetics with darker supernatural stakes. While the series achieved a dedicated cult following for its haunting soundtrack and unique visual identity, it remains a notable example of the experimental, standalone OVA format that flourished in Japan prior to the broader shift toward episodic television production.
