Unlike the main television anime series which is mostly set in modern-day Japan, the new series will be a "sealed room" suspense comedy set 100 years in the future. The story begins when Shinnosuke and the entire Nohara family wake up from cold sleep to find themselves aboard a space ship drifting in space. The anime will depict the various events that take place inside the ship.

Where it came from
Released in 2016, Aliens vs. Shinnosuke was the first entry in the Shin chan spin-off series produced by Shin-Ei Animation. It was created to celebrate the franchise's longevity and to explore more experimental, mature, or absurdist storytelling formats that differed from the traditional long-running television series. This shift toward streaming-first distribution reflected the changing landscape of Japanese animation, utilizing the Amazon Prime Video platform to reach a global audience with a more concentrated, episodic narrative structure.
The creative direction for the series leaned into high-concept parody, with this specific installment riffing on science fiction horror tropes. By placing Shinnosuke and his family into an extraterrestrial thriller setting, the designers aimed to subvert the character's typical suburban domesticity while maintaining the franchise's signature irreverent humor. The series was generally well-received by fans for successfully revitalizing the character dynamic through shorter, high-intensity plots that felt fresh compared to the standard broadcast episodes.
