Where it came from
Shouzen, produced by the Chinese digital platform Bilibili, represents a significant entry in the studio's mid-2020s push to expand its high-concept original animation slate. Launched as part of an effort to diversify beyond established web novel adaptations, the series was developed to showcase the technical evolution of domestic CGI and hand-drawn hybrid techniques, aiming to provide a distinct visual language that aligns with Bilibili's branding as a hub for contemporary youth-oriented media.
The production process for the series prioritized a modern aesthetic that synthesizes traditional cultural motifs with futuristic narrative elements. By recruiting established domestic creative teams, the studio aimed to capture the nuances of its genre while pushing for greater global accessibility. Upon its release, the series was noted for its ambitious visual storytelling, serving as a case study in how Bilibili leverages its platform-specific data to refine its narrative tone for a demanding, digitally native audience.
