Where it came from
Sin: The Movie was released in 2000 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by ADV Films, serving as a prequel to the first-person shooter video game Sin, originally developed by Ritual Entertainment. The project was conceived as an attempt to capitalize on the rising popularity of the cyberpunk aesthetic in Western animation during the late 1990s, aiming to translate the gritty, dystopian world of the game's protagonist, John Blade, into a narrative-driven film format.
The animation was handled by the Japanese studio Zett, with a creative mandate to blend traditional anime sensibilities with the hard-boiled action tropes prevalent in 1980s and 1990s science fiction cinema. Upon its release, the film received a mixed reception from both anime enthusiasts and fans of the source game, often cited as a niche curiosity that highlights the era's ambition to cross-pollinate interactive gaming media with long-form animation.
