Sisters of Wellber - Elegy for a Sad Warrior

Sisters of Wellber: Elegy for a Sad Warrior was released in 2007 as a three-part original video animation (OVA) series, serving as a direct sequel to the 2007 television anime Sisters of Wellber. Produced by the acclaimed studio Production I.G alongside Trans Arts, the project was designed to conclude the journey of Rita and Tina, two women navigating a world defined by political instability and the shifting fortunes of the Kingdom of Wellber. The animation sought to maintain the high-fantasy aesthetic established in the series while intensifying the focus on the evolving camaraderie between the two leads as they confronted the consequences of their earlier decisions.

The narrative structure of the OVAs was heavily influenced by the genre of historical fantasy, prioritizing character-driven drama over the rapid-fire action sequences common in contemporary series of the era. The animation direction aimed for a refined, slightly grounded look that emphasized the bleakness of their travels compared to the more vibrant royal settings of the initial television run. Critical reception at the time of its release was modest, with the series being noted primarily for its resolution of the unresolved plot threads left lingering after the TV broadcast, marking it as a necessary companion piece for dedicated followers of the franchise.
