Where it came from
Snack Basue is a 2024 television anime series adapted from the long-running gag manga by Forbidden Shibukawakawa. Produced by Studio PuYUKAI and directed by Minoru Ashina, the series captures the surreal, conversational humor characteristic of the source material. It is centered around the nightly interactions and eccentric clientele of a snack bar located in the Susukino district of Sapporo, Hokkaido.
The animation style is purposefully minimalist, emphasizing comedic timing and dialogue over elaborate visual fidelity. By leaning into an aesthetic that mirrors the rough-hewn charm of the original manga panels, the production team aimed to retain the deadpan delivery that defines the series. It was received as a niche entry in the comedy genre, noted primarily for its unconventional pacing and its commitment to the dry, absurdist humor of the bar’s regulars.
