Where it came from
Sore Ike! Anpanman: Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun was released in 2024 as the 35th feature film in the long-running Anpanman franchise. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the film commemorates the ongoing legacy of Takashi Yanase’s iconic creation, which has remained a cultural cornerstone for young children in Japan since the manga’s debut in 1973. This entry focuses on the dynamic between the heroic Anpanman and his perennial antagonist, Baikinman, centering the narrative around a magical picture book world to explore themes of resilience and partnership.
The film was directed by Jun Kawagoe, a veteran of the series known for balancing the franchise’s gentle morality with engaging animation sequences. The design aesthetic maintains the traditional, soft-edged art style established by the late Yanase, ensuring consistency across decades of media. Upon its release, the film was received as a nostalgic and heartwarming addition to the series, praised for its commitment to the classic character archetypes while introducing imaginative new settings that keep the expansive Anpanman universe relevant for modern audiences.
