Where it came from
Sotsugyou M: Ore-tachi no Carnival was released in 1999 as an original video animation production by Nippon Columbia. It serves as a narrative expansion of the Sotsugyou M franchise, which originated from a dating simulation game series. The project capitalized on the late 1990s trend of adapting character-driven media into musical and voice-acting showcases, focusing on the five main male protagonists known as the M-Gumi.
The aesthetic and production style reflect the era's focus on idol-centric anime marketing, where character design emphasized trendy, late-nineties visual sensibilities. Directed toward an audience already invested in the broader Sotsugyou franchise, the animation was intended to bridge the gap between the games and the vocal performance albums released by the voice actor ensemble. While it remains a niche entry within the studio's catalog, it is recognized by enthusiasts of the genre for its role in solidifying the character archetypes that defined the M-Gumi brand.
