Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF

Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf serves as a 2024 television adaptation of Isuna Hasekura's light novel series, originally launched in 2006. Produced by the animation studio Passione—with Toho managing the production committee—the project was developed to reintroduce the story of the traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence and the harvest deity Holo to a new generation. The production aimed to maintain the intricate economic focus and character-driven dialogue of the original while utilizing modern digital animation techniques to enhance the detailed, medieval-inspired European setting.

The character designs for this iteration were handled by Jūgo Moriyasu, who sought to capture the distinct charm of the classic illustrations by Jūu Ayakura while refining the visual consistency for a contemporary broadcast format. The series was met with interest from both long-time fans and new viewers, garnering praise for its careful pacing and its faithful approach to the source material’s unique blend of mercantile strategy and fantasy folklore.
