The now 50 year old Scientific Boys Club decides to built a ship that sails to Mars on the "Ethereal Current" - a thesis of the wife of a club member which claims that the universe is flooded with Ethereal energy. On this stream they travel to Mars in order to prove an old theory about channels on Mars built by Martians, but there is no life. Many years later, when both theories are considered to be nonsense, a Mars expedition discovers a stone with the inscription "Scientific Boys Club 1954".

Where it came from
Spirit of Wonder: Scientific Boys Club was released in 2001 as an original video animation produced by Bandai Visual, based on the manga series by Kenji Tsuruta. The project serves as an atmospheric adaptation of Tsuruta's work, which is celebrated for its meticulous attention to detail, blend of steampunk aesthetics, and gentle sense of curiosity regarding turn-of-the-century science and discovery.
The animation reflects Tsuruta's distinct visual style, characterized by soft linework and a focus on slice-of-life wonder rather than high-stakes action. It follows a group of young inventors in a turn-of-the-century setting, capturing a nostalgic, romanticized view of early technological advancement. The production was well-regarded among fans of niche, atmospheric anime for its fidelity to the source material's tranquil and whimsical tone.
