Where it came from
Starly Girls: Episode Starsia was conceived as a multi-media project centered on the anthropomorphism of celestial bodies, a popular sub-genre in Japanese pop culture that blends astronomy with character-driven narrative. The project was developed by Kadokawa Games, with the original concept and direction led by Yoshimi Yasuda. The initiative launched with a mobile game released in 2016, aiming to attract fans of science fiction and character collection games through high-quality 3D models and a distinct aesthetic that reimagined stars as 'Starly Girls' who pilot 'Gravity Gears'.
The Original Net Animation (ONA) was produced to expand the franchise’s world-building, acting as a narrative companion to the mobile title. It was designed to provide a cohesive visual identity to the game's established lore, focusing on the defense of the universe against the 'Star Decay' phenomenon. While the franchise garnered a niche following for its character designs, the project faced challenges in a crowded mobile market, and the servers for the primary game were eventually closed in 2018, rendering the ONA a preserved artifact of a short-lived transmedia experiment.
