When an alien force eventually called the “Neuroi” attacks Earth around the 1940’s, the world is devastated by destruction. However, one man is able to lead the invention of an anti-Neuroi weapon known as the “Striker unit” which augments magical power and also enables flight through two mechanical lower-leg coverings known as a sort of witches “broom”. Young witches from around the world are gathered together to fight back in a force known as Strike Witches. The inventor, however, was thought to have been killed during service. The daughter of the inventor leads a relatively normal life except for her untrained and incredible magical power which she hopes to use one day in healing. However, she is suddenly whisked away on a search to see if her father is actually alive. She encounters his invention and the possibility of perhaps using it herself.

Where it came from
The Strike Witches OVA was released in 2007 as an experimental pilot project by studio GONZO to test the viability of a multimedia franchise. Conceived during a period when the studio was exploring unique blends of historical military aesthetics and character-driven fantasy, the OVA served as the foundation for the eventual television series. It established the core premise of young women equipped with aerial combat units defending humanity against an otherworldly threat known as the Neuroi, drawing heavily from the illustrations of Humikane Shimada.
Humikane Shimada, the original character designer, aimed to synthesize vintage mechanical designs from mid-20th-century aviation with stylized, magical protagonists. His approach focused on detailed technical accuracy for the Striker Units contrasted with the soft, emotive character work that would define the franchise. Upon release, the OVA was received as a niche but visually distinctive work, noted for its unconventional thematic blend which successfully sparked enough audience interest to greenlight a full-scale television production in 2008.
