Where it came from
Released in 1991, Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bouken Land was a promotional anime OVA produced by Bandai to celebrate the launch of the Super Mario World game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The production was part of a broader marketing push in Japan, intended to introduce the game's mechanics and characters, such as Yoshi, to a younger television audience through an interactive storytelling format.
The OVA was directed by Tsuneo Genda and utilized a unique narrative style where the viewer was prompted to make choices, essentially playing through the story like a choose-your-own-adventure game. By presenting the plot as an extension of the game's world, the studio aimed to capture the playful, whimsical tone of the Super Mario series, though the experimental interactive structure remained a novelty that never saw a wide international release.
