In the Sengoku period, a rounin called Nanashi (meaning nameless) saves a young boy Kotarou and his dog Tobimaru at an abandoned temple. Kotarou has no family, is pursued by a mysterious militia organization from China, and hires Nanashi as his bodyguard. Among the pursuers is a man called Rarou, a very skilled warrior with blond hair and blue eyes. He obeys an old man called Byakuran and is a member of the Chinese militia. Unlike his companions in the militia, he is not serving any Emperor and just wants to fight with the strong.

Where it came from
The Sword of the Stranger pilot was produced by Studio Bones as a promotional effort leading up to the 2007 theatrical release of the feature film. Directed by Masahiro Ando, the studio aimed to showcase the high-quality animation and fluid, realistic swordplay that would define the final project. This short piece served as a technical proof-of-concept, allowing the creative team to refine the kinetic visual style that set the film apart from more stylized anime of the period.
The pilot reflects the studio's commitment to traditional cel-style movement and intricate choreography, overseen by veteran animators who sought to ground the film in a gritty, historical aesthetic. While the full feature received significant critical acclaim for its ambitious action sequences, the pilot remains a coveted rarity among animation enthusiasts, representing the early development phase of one of Bones' most technically demanding period pieces.
