Tachumaru Gekijou

Tachumaru Gekijou was produced in 2010 by Tatsunoko Production as a series of short, humorous animated segments. The project was conceived as a promotional vehicle for the city of Hikone in Shiga Prefecture, specifically designed to feature the mascot character Hikonyan, a white cat wearing a samurai helmet modeled after the armor of Ii Naotaka, a historical lord of the Hikone Domain. By adapting the beloved local mascot into a theatrical-style short format, the studio aimed to enhance the city's tourism appeal through lighthearted, accessible storytelling.

The animation style draws upon the classic sensibilities of Tatsunoko Production, known for its extensive history in Japanese animation since the 1960s. The shorts adopt a simplified, expressive aesthetic suited for brief intervals of entertainment, focusing on the whimsical interactions of the mascot within the historical context of Hikone Castle. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a regional cultural effort, serving as a successful example of utilizing mascot branding to bridge traditional historical preservation with modern media engagement.
