For her first year of high school, family circumstances force Fuu Sawatari to move to Takehara, a scenic old town near Hiroshima on the Inland Sea and live with her relatives. Her father, who has passed away, grew up in Takehara and always spoke fondly of his childhood while living there. Sawatari learns to love taking photographs with his old film camera, a Rollei 35S while making friends and learning about the town.

Where it came from
The Tamayura OVA series was produced by Hal Film Maker and released in 2010 under the direction of Junichi Sato. It was created as a gentle, slice-of-life project centered on the themes of photography and small-town nostalgia, specifically set in the coastal city of Takehara in Hiroshima Prefecture. The narrative follows a high school student named Fuu Sawatari, whose passion for taking photos with her late father's Rolleiflex camera serves as the emotional anchor of the story, highlighting the beauty found in everyday moments.
Junichi Sato, known for his work on projects like Aria, aimed to evoke a sense of healing and quiet introspection with this series. The design of the anime emphasizes soft lighting and a muted color palette to match its tranquil atmosphere. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the iyashikei genre for its sincerity and meticulous depiction of the real-world location, eventually leading to a full-length television series and feature film sequels that further expanded the characters' personal growth.
