Where it came from
Tenshi Nanka ja Nai, known in English as I'm Not an Angel, originated as a beloved shojo manga series by Ai Yazawa, serialized in Ribon magazine between 1991 and 1994. The 1994 OVA adaptation was produced by Group TAC, a studio recognized for its contributions to 1990s anime aesthetics. The project sought to capture the emotional resonance of Yazawa's high school setting and her signature character-focused storytelling, which often explored the nuances of friendship, romance, and artistic ambition.
The character designs were crafted to mirror Yazawa's distinct, fashion-forward artistic style, which gained significant cultural traction throughout the decade. Upon release, the OVA served as a companion piece to the manga, appealing to fans of the series' earnest and occasionally melodramatic tone. While anime adaptations of shojo manga from this era were often concise, the production remains a significant artifact for those documenting the transition of Yazawa’s work from print to animation before her later, more globally recognized hits like Paradise Kiss and Nana.
