The Little Prince lives on Asteroid B612, a tiny rock floating in space. He spends his days cleaning out the three small volcanos on the asteroid (which he also uses to cook his breakfast), weeding out the baobob trees that threaten to take over, and caring for his friend the Rose Girl. When he gets lonely for company he catches a comet in his butterfly net and flies off to Earth for all sorts of adventures.

Where it came from
Produced by TV Asahi and animated by Knack Productions, The Adventures of the Little Prince premiered in 1978 as a thoughtful adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved philosophical novella. The series was designed to translate the whimsical and meditative tone of the original text into an episodic format, expanding upon the Prince’s encounters on various planets. The production team aimed to capture the gentle, melancholic spirit of the source material while introducing new characters and narratives that appealed to a younger audience through high-quality cel animation and a signature musical score.
The series received international attention for its faithful adherence to the source material’s poignant themes of loneliness, friendship, and the complexities of adulthood. Despite the challenges of adapting such a concise literary work into a multi-episode television arc, the production is often cited for its artistic consistency and its role in introducing Saint-Exupéry’s masterpiece to a global television audience throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
