Deep-sea archeologist Hiroshi Ibuki is the member of the digging team working at the bottom of the sea hoping to uncover the origins of Earth's existence but instead uncovers a mysterious colony of bacteria which gives off light similar to the Aurora Borealis. The ancient bacteria, once revived, attempt to make the world habitable for themselves —a process that would bring Earth back to its early primal form, killing all current life in the process.

Where it came from
The Aurora is a short film released in 2000, functioning as an experimental piece within the independent filmmaking circuit of the turn of the millennium. It was produced as a reflection on minimalist narrative structures, aiming to explore atmospheric storytelling through visual motifs rather than traditional dialogue-heavy scripts. The project emerged during a period of burgeoning interest in digital filmmaking, where creators were increasingly experimenting with the aesthetic possibilities of non-linear editing and low-budget digital cinematography.
The design and direction of the film prioritize visual composition, utilizing light and shadow to establish a distinct, introspective tone. It was crafted by a team focused on the evocative potential of short-form cinema, seeking to capture fleeting moments of human experience. Upon its limited release, it was noted primarily within niche film festival circles and academic circles for its stylistic coherence and its departure from conventional commercial expectations of the era.
