The Brave of Gold Goldran

The Brave of Gold Goldran was produced by Sunrise as the sixth entry in the Brave series, an influential franchise of mecha anime that emerged from the merger of Sunrise and Takara. Airing in 1995, the series followed the established formula of the genre—centrally featuring sentient transforming robots that bonded with children—while shifting the tone toward a more comedic and lighthearted adventure compared to the more serious installments that preceded it.

The design of the series’ titular robot, Goldran, was spearheaded by Kunio Okawara, a legendary figure in mecha design who was instrumental in defining the look of the early Brave franchise. Okawara intended for the aesthetic to emphasize a distinct sense of heroic opulence, utilizing a bold gold-centric color palette that contrasted with the more industrial designs common in other robot anime of the era. The series was well-received by its target audience, remaining a beloved staple of the 1990s super robot subgenre for its expressive character animation and vibrant visual identity.
