The Daichis are a family in danger of tearing itself apart. Dissatisfied and money obsessed mom Seiko has served wimpy and otaku dad Mamoru with divorce papers. Daughter Nozomi who has always been saddled with all the housework, feels pained that everyone is using her. The youngest albeit most foul mouthed, Dai is forced to watch all this as everything is going to pieces. However when the Galaxy Federation recruits the Daichis to combat alien threats to the wellbeing of the Earth, it will be a chance for the family to save the world and maybe themselves.

Where it came from
The Daichis: Earth's Defense Family was produced by Bandai Visual and animated by Gainax as a satirical take on the sentai and family-drama anime genres. Released in 2001, the series centers on the Daichi family, whose members are forced to defend the planet against extraterrestrial threats while navigating the mundane and often strained dynamics of their personal lives. It serves as a parody that juxtaposes high-stakes space opera tropes with the banal realities of Japanese suburban existence.
The series was directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani, who aimed to subvert the traditional heroic narrative by focusing on the inconvenience and friction caused by the family's secret responsibilities. While the show is recognized for its comedic tone and stylistic shifts, it remains a niche entry in the Gainax catalog, often discussed in the context of the studio’s experimental post-Evangelion era. It was received as a lighthearted, self-aware curiosity that contrasts sharply with the studio's more gravity-laden works.
