Provenance

Where it came from

The Drop, released in 1965, was a short experimental film produced by Mushi Production, the studio founded by the legendary Osamu Tezuka. During this period, the studio was actively diversifying its output beyond the commercial success of Astro Boy, seeking to push the boundaries of Japanese animation through avant-garde techniques and non-narrative storytelling. It stands as a representative work of mid-century Japanese animation, reflecting a shift toward artistic expression that moved away from traditional character-driven television formats.

While little specific documentation remains regarding the primary creative leads, the film encapsulates the experimental spirit fostered by Tezuka within his studio, where animators were encouraged to explore surreal imagery and fluid motion. The film is characterized by its abstract aesthetic and rhythmic pacing, which garnered interest within animation circles for its departure from the era's limited animation style. It remains a notable, if obscure, artifact that illustrates the experimental ambitions of 1960s independent Japanese cinema.
