The Garden of Sinners, known in Japan as Kara no Kyoukai, began as a series of web novels by Kinoko Nasu before being adapted into a seven-part film series produced by the animation studio ufotable, with the first installment, Overlooking View, debuting in 2007. This project served as a pivotal moment for ufotable, establishing their reputation for high-fidelity digital compositing and atmospheric storytelling. The production team aimed to capture the dark, metaphysical tone of Nasu’s prose, focusing on Shiki Ryougi’s internal duality and her mysterious ability to perceive the death of things.

The character designs were handled by Tomonori Sudo, who sought to translate Takashi Takeuchi’s original illustrations into a fluid, cinematic medium.
