Where it came from
The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D, released in 2016 by studio DLE, emerged as a comedic spin-off of the iconic shojo manga series The Glass Mask by Suzue Miuchi. Produced to celebrate the series' enduring cultural footprint, the project reimagined the dramatic, high-stakes world of theatrical acting as a lighthearted gag series featuring the original characters in a classroom setting, intentionally contrasting the intense melodrama of the source material with a simplified, surrealist animation style typical of DLE’s output.
This iteration reflects a broader trend in Japanese media where classic properties are revitalized through parody shorts to engage younger audiences and diversify the franchise's identity. While the stylistic shift from the original's detailed aesthetic was jarring to some long-time devotees, the series was received as a playful, self-aware experiment that leaned into the eccentricities of the characters rather than attempting a faithful adaptation of the original narrative drama.
