Where it came from
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – Northern War was produced by Tatsunoko Production and released in 2023 as an anime television series. It serves as a narrative bridge set within the expansive Trails series, specifically taking place between the events of Trails of Cold Steel II and III. The story focuses on the perspective of the Northern Jaegers, a mercenary group from the annexed state of North Ambria, exploring the geopolitical tensions leading up to the events of the main game franchise.
The series was directed by Hidekazu Sato, who aimed to translate the intricate world-building of Nihon Falcom’s role-playing games into an animated medium. While the production sought to provide deeper insight into the lore of the Zemurian continent and the plight of the North Ambrian people, it received mixed critical reception upon release, with some viewers noting the challenges of balancing the dense political background of the games with the requirements of a serialized television format.
