Based on Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel, Fugou Keiji.
The story centers around millionaire Daisuke Kambe, the heir to one of the wealthiest families in Japan, who is assigned as a detective to the Modern Crime Prevention Task Force (aka MCPTF), at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Taking full advantage of his vast family wealth, he spares no expense in solving complex crimes, and has the tendency to evaluate everything including individual human lives in terms of their monetary value. Haru Katou, a detective with a compassionate heart who believes that money isn’t everything, is chosen as Kambe’s partner but is repulsed by his materialistic attitude. Having diametrically opposing personalities, witness how the two join forces to tackle seemingly unsolvable crimes and mysteries!

Where it came from
The Millionaire Detective - Balance: UNLIMITED was produced by CloverWorks and released in 2020 as an adaptation of the novel series by Yasutaka Tsutsui. The series functions as a modern reimagining of the original 1978 mystery stories, transposing the narrative into a contemporary setting characterized by advanced technology and extreme displays of wealth. By shifting the focus to Daisuke Kambe, a detective with seemingly infinite financial resources, the show explores the friction between traditional police procedural tropes and the unchecked influence of private capital.
The character designs were handled by Keigo Sasaki, who aimed to establish a sophisticated and polished aesthetic to match the protagonist's opulent lifestyle. Directed by Tomohiko Ito, the production was noted for its integration of jazz-influenced soundtracks and stylish visual transitions, which served to emphasize the protagonist's detachment from the constraints of his colleagues. While the series was paused briefly due to production impacts from the global pandemic, it received positive recognition for its stylistic flair and the chemistry between its two lead characters, Daisuke Kambe and Haru Kato.
