Where it came from
The Phoenix: Chapter of Yamato was released in 1987 as part of a series of original video animations adapting Osamu Tezuka’s seminal manga, Hi no Tori. Produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse, this chapter translates Tezuka’s sprawling, philosophical narrative regarding the pursuit of immortality and the cyclical nature of human history into a grounded aesthetic that reflects the experimental spirit of the 1980s OVA market.
Directed by Toshio Hirata, the production sought to capture the somber, existential tone of Tezuka’s original work while utilizing the medium of animation to emphasize the contrast between ancient Japanese folklore and the distant future. The visual design leans into a clean, minimalist style that emphasizes character expression and pacing, a deliberate departure from the more action-oriented series of the era, which earned it a reputation as a thoughtful, contemplative entry in the broader Phoenix franchise.
