1887, at a remote, elite boarding school in France: Serge Battour returns after his graduation, and remembers the days of his youth...
1880, at the same school: Son of a viscount and a Roma prostitute (both deceased), Serge is intelligent, sweet, talented, and alienated by his family due to his heritage. Upon being sent to his new school, he rooms with Gilbert Cocteau, a gorgeous loner of a boy who sells his body for reasons unknown. Serge's attempts to reach out to Gilbert fail spectacularly, and yet there is something in both of them that attracts them to each other.

Where it came from
The Poem of Wind and Trees, or Kaze to Ki no Uta, was adapted into an original video animation in 1987, stemming from the seminal 1970s manga series by Keiko Takemiya. The source material is widely regarded as a foundational work of the boys' love genre, noted for its complex psychological depth and its exploration of forbidden romantic themes within a strict French boarding school setting. The transition to animation sought to capture the lyrical, dramatic aesthetic of Takemiya's art, which was known for its innovative layouts and evocative character designs.
The production was handled with a focus on reflecting the melancholic and intense atmosphere of the original manga. While the anime format provided a condensed version of the sprawling narrative, it maintained the high-strung emotional tension and gothic romanticism that defined the work. Upon its release, the adaptation was received as a significant stylistic exercise, praised for its attempt to translate Takemiya's distinct visual vocabulary into motion, even as it served as a stark contrast to the more mainstream animation trends of the late 1980s.
