Saiunkoku is a world of eight provinces or houses, each named after a different colour. The new Emperor, Shi Ryuuki, has gained a reputation for being uninterested in courtly matters and for flaunting his love for men. Shuurei, although born of the important Kou family, has difficulty making ends meet. She easily accepts an invitation to be the Emperor's concubine in order to turn him into a good ruler. The mysterious Seiran, a young man who was adopted by her father, goes with her as Ryuuki's bodyguard. Entering the imperial palace revives Shuurei's dream of being a court official, and, together with the many companions she meets along the way, continues moving bravely forward while trying to fend off the Emperor's advances.

Where it came from
The Story of Saiunkoku was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and premiered in 2006, serving as an adaptation of the popular light novel series written by Sai Yukino. The narrative follows Shurei Kou, a noblewoman in a fictionalized version of imperial China who aspires to become the first female official in a historically patriarchal court. This series emerged during a period when shojo-themed historical dramas were gaining traction, blending political intrigue with character-driven development.
The animation design emphasizes a vibrant, sweeping aesthetic consistent with Madhouse's reputation for high-quality production values during that era. The creative team aimed to balance the rigid hierarchy of court life with the protagonist's optimistic, reform-minded spirit. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its complex ensemble cast and the thoughtful way it handled themes of gender equality and social duty, cementing its place as a significant title within the fantasy-romance genre of the mid-2000s.
