Synopsis

This series has nothing to do with Moby Dick. In fact, it was the first series by TMS that was not based on any original work. The story: In ancient times, the continents of Atlantis and Mu fought a war, and Atlantis lost. After losing the war, Atlantis transformed itself into a small planet and timeslipped to the present-day to try to take over the world again. But five warriors from Mu assemble on Easter Island, and together with giant cyborg white whale that houses the brain of the ancient queen of Mu, fight Atlantis off at various famous ruins around the world.

Provenance

Where it came from

The White Whale of Mu, known in Japan as Byakuga no Shiroyuki, was produced in 1980 by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. It emerged during an era of significant ambition in Japanese animation, blending the popular science fiction craze of the late seventies with the adventurous spirit of classic literature, most notably taking thematic inspiration from Moby Dick. The series was designed to capture a younger demographic by transporting the hunt for an elusive, mystical creature into a futuristic, space-faring setting.

The visual direction was overseen by Osamu Dezaki, a visionary whose influence on the aesthetic language of anime remains profound. Dezaki utilized his signature 'postcard memory' technique—the use of dramatic, stylized still frames—to heighten emotional impact during key narrative moments. While the series was aimed at a broad audience, it occupies a specific niche in animation history as an experimental bridge between traditional high-adventure storytelling and the increasingly complex mechanical designs that would come to define the decade.
