Time of Shura

Time of Shura, known in Japan as Shura no Toki, was produced by Studio Comet and released in 2004. The series is based on the manga written and illustrated by Masatoshi Kawahara, which focuses on the history of the legendary Mutsu Enmei-ryu martial arts style. It serves as a historical prequel to the broader Mutsu Enmei-ryu Gaiden franchise, spanning multiple centuries and depicting various generations of the Mutsu family as they navigate the shifting political landscapes of feudal Japan.

The animation reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of mid-2000s seinen anime, prioritizing grounded character designs and fluid combat sequences over the more stylized, high-contrast visuals seen in other action titles of the era. Critics at the time praised the series for its episodic structure, which allowed it to function as a series of standalone historical vignettes, while noting that its dedication to period accuracy and stoic character archetypes gave it a distinct, somber tone compared to its contemporaries.
