Where it came from
Tonari no Gokudou-kun was produced by Brain's Base as an original video animation released in 2013, serving as a companion piece to the popular My Little Monster anime series. It was bundled with the thirteenth volume of the original manga series by Robico, extending the narrative universe and offering fans a humorous, alternative-reality spin on the established characters.
The animation maintains the aesthetic and character design established by the main series, directed by Hiro Kaburagi. The episode recontextualizes the school-based romantic comedy cast into a yakuza-themed setting, a common trope for franchise bonuses of the era. It was received by the fan base as a lighthearted supplement, prioritizing character interaction and comedic subversion over the dramatic arcs of the core television series.
